Introduction
Shopper Actions give customers more control over their payment experience by adding new options to the Shopper Display, including pre-dipping, card selection, cash back requests, and EBT/eWIC balance checks. Choices the shopper makes on their side pre-fill sections of the cashier screen, making checkout faster while keeping the cashier’s workflow unchanged.What is Pre-Dip?
Pre-dip allows customers to tap, swipe, or insert their credit or debit cards before the cashier finalizes the transaction. This speeds up checkout by securely storing card information while the basket is still being built, ensuring a faster and smoother payment process. ✏️ Note - A Few Reminders on Pre-Dip- Pre-dipping a card does not result in a charge until the cashier confirms the final payment amount.
- Only credit and debit cards can be pre-dipped.
- A pre-dipped card payment may be cancelled by the cashier before the transaction is complete.
What can customers do with Shopper Actions?
Cashiers still ring up customers in the same way as before, but now customers have more options! With Shopper Actions, customers can:- Select their payment type on the Shopper Display.
- Request cash back and enter the amount directly on the Shopper Display.
- Tap, swipe, insert, or scan their card to pre-load payment while items are being scanned.
- Request a balance check for EBT and eWIC cards.
What are the benefits of Shopper Actions?
- Faster Checkout: Customers can pre-dip cards, allowing for quicker payments when the basket is ready.
- Smoother Transaction Process: With options pre-selected on the payment screen, cashiers can focus on finalizing the sale without delays.
- Fewer Payment Errors: With customers selecting their payment methods, the risk of input mistakes is reduced.
- Control Over Options: Cashiers still have full control over finalizing payment, ensuring smooth processing while letting customers handle card insertion and payment selection.
- Enhanced Privacy: Customers can insert their cards and select payment options themselves, reducing the need for cashier involvement in sensitive payment details.

Shopper Actions don’t change how cashiers ring up customers, but they do streamline the checkout process. This section covers where the experience will feel faster and how cashiers can see and edit the choices shoppers make through the Shopper Actions.1. Cashier Overview Video
2. Main Cashier Screen - “Complete Payment” Button
The Complete Payment button is used to notify the cashier if the customer is using Shopper Actions on the shopper display, including:- Pre-Selected Payment Type
- Cash Back Amount
3. Cashier Payment Screen - Locked Payment Type
If a customer selects a payment type on the shopper display, that payment type will be automatically selected when the cashier proceeds to the Payment screen. Depending on the card type, tapping the Confirm Amount button does one of two things:- Credit, Debit: Immediately charges the pre-dipped card.
- EBT & eWIC: Enables the payment terminal to accept card details, then charges the card once entered.
- Gift Card: Immediately applies funds from the gift card if it was scanned during checkout.
Changing a Locked Payment Type
Customers can pre-select a payment type during checkout, but cashiers can still change it before completing the transaction. To change the pre-selected payment type, the cashier can tap a different payment option and confirm the change in the notification window. Afterward, the cashier may adjust the payment amount and tap the Confirm Amount button to proceed to the payment collection step. 🎥 Watch It in Action - Changing Payment Type In the example above, a customer has pre-dipped their credit card, but decides to pay in cash before the payment is completed. The cashier selects Cash as the payment type, then confirms this selection. This change in payment type automatically removes the pre-dipped card’s information from the terminal since that card will no longer be used.4. Cashier Payment Screen - Clear Card Info
When a customer pre-dips their credit, debit, or gift card, the card’s information is stored and ready for payment. If the customer wants to pay with a different card, the cashier can remove the stored card info by tapping Clear Card Info on the payment screen. After the card’s info is cleared, the new card’s details can be captured after the cashier taps Confirm Amount on the payment screen. After the new card is entered, there will be an immediate charge attempt to the card. 🎥 Watch It in Action - Clearing Card Info In the example above, a customer has pre-dipped their credit card, but decides to pay with a different card before the payment is completed. The cashier selects Clear Card Info to remove the pre-dipped card’s details. Next, the cashier taps Confirm Amount, and the payment terminal prompts the customer to tap, swipe, or insert their new card for payment. Once the customer enters the card, the transaction is complete.5. Shopper-Side Cash Back
With Debit and EBT Cash, customers can select cash back amounts directly on the shopper display. If chosen, the cashier will be notified in multiple ways that cash back is due. The cash back process remains unchanged—after payment is collected, the cash drawer opens, and a prompt displays the cash back amount due. This prompt stays on-screen until the cashier taps Continue or closes the cash drawer.Editing Cash Back Amount
If the pre-entered cash back amount needs to be changed or removed, the cashier can tap the Shopper button on the main POS screen, then select Cash Back. They can enter a new amount or set it to $0.00, then tap Confirm Amount to save the change. 🎥 Watch It in Action - Editing Cash Back Amount In the example above, the customer pre-selected $60 cash back on the shopper display. The cashier can edit this amount by tapping the Shopper button on the main cashier screen, then selecting Cash Back. From there, the cashier can enter a different cash back amount and tap Confirm Amount to save the change. To remove cash back entirely, they can leave the amount at $0.00 and tap Confirm Amount.Cash Back Limits
The cash back options available on the shopper display depend on:-
Cash on-hand: Customers cannot request more cash back than what is available in the lane’s cash drawer.
- For example, if the drawer has 60 cash back option will not be available.
- Max cash back amount - Limits for allowable cash back may be set in back office. Directions to adjusting this may be found by clicking here.
What Customers Can Do with Shopper Actions
Shopper Actions on the Shopper Display let customers make payment choices while their transaction is being processed, reducing checkout time and minimizing the need for cashier assistance. This section covers the available actions and how they streamline the checkout process.1. Pre-Dip Payments (Credit & Debit Only)

- Only credit and debit cards can be pre-dipped.
- A pre-dipped card payment may be cancelled by the cashier before the transaction is complete.
- Credit - If pre-dipping with credit, the customer may tap, insert, or swipe their card.
- Debit - If pre-dipping with debit, the customer must insert or swipe the card, then confirm the card is debit on the payment terminal.
2. Pre-Select Payment Type
If paying with card types besides credit or debit, customers can pre-select their payment type on the Shopper Display. When the cashier reaches the payment screen, the chosen method will already be selected. The cashier must then confirm the charge amount before the shopper can tap, swipe, or insert their card.- To select a card type, tap More Options:

3. Request Cash Back
If paying with Debit or EBT Cash, the customer can request cash back be added to the transaction. Customer directions for each card type may be found below:Debit
- Chip-insert or swipe the debit card on the payment terminal.
- Select Debit on the payment terminal’s touchscreen and enter the debit PIN when prompted.
- On the Shopper Display, tap More Options then select the cash back amount in the cash back section.
EBT Cash
- On the Shopper Display, tap More Options. Then select EBT Cash under payment types.
- Once EBT Cash is selected, tap More Options to re-open the menu and select the cash back amount.
- Once the cashier is finished ringing up items and confirms payment amount, the payment terminal will prompt to present payment details.
4. Request Balance Check on EBT or eWIC cards
Customers are able to use Shopper Actions on the Shopper Display to check the balance of their EBT or eWIC card during a transaction. Directions by card type below:EBT SNAP & EBT Cash
- On the Shopper Display, tap More Options
- In the Other section of the Shopper Actions menu, select Check Balance - EBT
- The payment terminal will prompt to tap, swipe, or insert their credit, then to enter the PIN code.
- The payment terminal will then display the card’s account balance.
eWIC
- On the Shopper Display, tap More Options
- In the Other section of the Shopper Actions menu, select Check Balance - EBT
- The payment terminal will prompt to tap, swipe, or insert their credit, then to enter the PIN code.
- The receipt printer will then print the card’s account balance.
