Handle Cash Transactions During the Penny Shortage

We’ve been getting questions about the ongoing penny shortage and conversations around potentially phasing out pennies. At this time, there is no automated rounding behavior built into the POS, but there are several workarounds cashiers can use to continue operating smoothly.

Recommended Workarounds

↘️ Use Discounts to Round Down

Manual discounts may be applied at the POS to round cash payments down to the nearest $0.05 increment.

↗️ Use Open Codes to Round Up

Your store may create a new open code product that is used to track cash payment adjustments. That open code product may then be applied to a cash payment transaction to increment the payment up to the nearest $0.05 increment.

✅ Encourage Exact Change or Non-Cash Payments

Posting signage that encourages customers to use exact change, cards, or digital wallets can reduce friction and speed up checkout.

✏️ Additional Notes

Whichever approach you choose, consistency is key. Make sure all cashiers follow the same rounding rules and understand that rounding applies to cash only, not to the price of individual items.
