Set Up Variable Weight Barcodes (Type-2 UPCs)

Learn how to create and manage Type-2 UPCs.

Table of Contents

What are Type-2 UPCs (Variable Weight Barcodes)?

  • Type-2 UPCs, also called variable weight barcodes, embed both the item’s PLU and price within the barcode.

  • They are commonly used for products sold by weight, such as meat, bulk goods, and cheese.

  • Usually, you weigh and label these items using a deli scale. To ensure your shoppers are charged correctly at the POS, you must register these barcodes correctly in the product catalog.

  • To ensure accurate scanning and pricing at the POS, these barcodes must be correctly registered in Vori’s product catalog.

✏️ Note: If you use the Ishida scale integration for Type-2 UPCs, manage promotional deals for Deli and Meat items via Price Changes rather than the Promotions module.

  2. Click New Product at the top right.

  3. In the Barcode field, enter the barcode using the specific Type-2 format:

    • Start with 2.

    • Add the 5-digit PLU (use leading zeros if needed, e.g., 00850 for PLU 850).

    • Add five zeros (00000).

    • Add the check digit at the end.

    • (Example: 2008500000# where # is the check digit).

Troubleshooting

Type-2 UPC not scanning properly? Double-check the barcode format. Ensure you started with 2, followed by the correct PLU, five zeros, and the correct check digit.

Price not reading correctly at the POS? Verify the embedded price in the printed barcode label. Confirm the product is set up with a Retail Price (even though the scanner overrides it, a base price is required).
