# Sell Bulk Items by the Gram

> Price bulk items like spices per gram and let cashiers enter the total grams sold at checkout

Stores that sell bulk items like spices, teas, or grains can price them per gram and use **Prompt for Quantity** to charge shoppers the correct total at checkout, without a connected scale.

### Set up a per-gram item in Back Office

1. Calculate the cost per gram for the item.

   * *(e.g., if a spice costs \$20.00 per kilogram, the per-gram price is \$0.02.)*

2. Select **Products** > **Product Catalog** from the left menu and locate the item, or create a new product.

3. Enter this per-gram cost as the **Retail Price**.

4. In the **Product Attributes** section, enable **Prompt for Quantity**.

5. Tap **Create Product** (or **Save**, if editing an existing item).

6. When this item is scanned or selected at the POS, the cashier is prompted to enter a quantity. The cashier enters the total number of grams the shopper is purchasing (e.g., "150" for 150 grams of cumin), and the POS multiplies that by the per-gram price to charge the correct total.

**✏️ Note:** This method reuses the quantity field to represent grams instead of whole units. It depends on the cashier determining the gram amount themselves — for example, from a customer-facing bulk scale that isn't connected to Vori, or a pre-set bag size. There's no scale integration and no tare-weight support with this method.

### When to use Sold by Weight instead

If your store weighs bulk items on a scale connected to Vori, or shoppers bring their own containers to bulk bins, set the item up as [**sold by weight**](/product-and-product-catalog-management/product-creation-and-set-up/set-up-variable-weight-barcodes) instead of using Prompt for Quantity. Sold by Weight items price per lb/kg from an actual scale reading, and support [**Container tare weights**](/bottle-deposits-tares-and-taxes/manage-tare-containers-at-the-pos) that subtract the jar or bag weight so shoppers are only charged for the product.

Use the per-gram Prompt for Quantity method covered above only when there's no scale integration in place.

**✏️ Note:** Sales reports for per-gram items show **quantity sold** as a gram count rather than an each or pound count. Keep this in mind when reviewing sales or inventory reports for these products, since the numbers won't line up with unit-based items in the same report.

### Troubleshooting

* **Quantity prompt not appearing at the register?** Go to Back Office and confirm the **Prompt for Quantity** toggle is active for that specific product.

* **Total looks wrong at checkout?** Confirm the **Retail Price** is set to the per-gram cost, not the per-kilogram or per-pound cost, and that the cashier entered the total grams sold.
