Overview

Many grocery stores sell lottery tickets, including scratchers and draw games (like Powerball or Mega Millions). This guide outlines best practices for handling lottery in Vori.

⚠️ Compliance Reminder:

  • It is your store’s responsibility to ensure full compliance with all state lottery regulations.

  • Vori provides tools to support lottery sales and manual entries, but does not verify compliance or validate winning tickets.

  • Make sure your store is registered, trained, and approved to sell and redeem lottery tickets in the state in which it operates.

Selling Lottery Tickets in Vori

  • Scratchers: Scratch-off tickets with UPCs can be scanned and sold at the POS like any other product. Vori supports importing these UPCs into your product catalog from the Back Office.
  • Draw Games: Tickets for draw games (e.g., Powerball, Mega Millions) are typically printed from a state lottery terminal and are not tied to a UPC. To sell draw game tickets in Vori, use manual entry at checkout.

💡 Tip: Create a custom product in the Back Office (e.g., "Lottery – Draw Ticket") with a set price to streamline manual sales at checkout.

Validating Winnings

Lottery winnings must be validated through the state's official lottery system or terminal at the store. Vori does not have a built-in feature for validating winning tickets.

⚠️ Caution: Always verify winning tickets through the state lottery's official procedures. Vori cannot validate winning tickets or determine prize amounts.

Paying Out Lottery Winnings

Stores may choose to pay out small winnings directly from the till. Larger prizes must be processed through your state’s lottery system.

If your store pays out small winnings, you can use either the Pay-Out feature or an Inline Refund at the POS to record the transaction.

  • Pay-Out: A simple way to track cash leaving the till.

  • Inline Refund: Ties the payout to a specific (manually entered) lottery item, which may provide a clearer audit trail for accounting.

How to Pay Out a Winning Ticket via a Pay-Out

  1. Validate the ticket using your state’s official lottery terminal.

  2. At the POS, tap Pay-Out.

  3. Enter the winning amount and reason (e.g., Lottery Winnings).

  4. Provide the customer with cash from the till.

  5. Complete the transaction.

How to Pay Out a Winning Ticket via an Inline Refund

  1. Add the winning lottery ticket to the basket.

  2. Tap on the item on the POS.

  3. Tap ...More.

  4. Select Refund Item.

  5. Item is now updated to a refund item.

  6. Proceed with adding items to the basket and proceed with payment.

✏️ Note: Both the Pay-Out method and the Inline Refund method are easy ways to process a lottery payout at the POS. Choose the option that best fits your store’s operation and workflow.

Setting a Lottery Payout Policy

We recommend creating a clear internal policy that outlines:

  • The maximum payout a cashier can pay out (e.g., $50).

  • When a manager must approve a payout.

  • How all payouts should be logged or tracked.

Viewing Payout Activity in the Back Office

You can track all payout and pay-in activity from the Reports section.

To view payout history:

  1. Go to Back Office.

  2. Navigate to Reports > Point of Sale > Till Pay Ins and Pay Outs.

  3. Filter by date or cashier to view recorded activity.

How should I pay out a winning ticket?

Use your state’s lottery terminal to confirm the winning amount, then:

  1. Tap Pay-Out at the POS.

  2. Enter the amount and reason.

  3. Provide cash to the customer.

  4. Alternatively, use an Inline Refund if preferred. 


How can I limit the payout amount a cashier can issue?

Update your settings in Back Office > Cashier Settings.

Where can I see all lottery payouts?

Admins can view all recorded payout activity in the Back Office.
