Manage 24/7 store operations effectively

This article explains best practices and tips for running a 24-hour grocery store.

Introduction

Running a 24/7 grocery store presents unique challenges, especially in managing POS systems and day-to-day operations. The following best practices help ensure smooth, uninterrupted service and optimal system performance.

Cash Register Till Closing and Opening Procedures

For accurate cash tracking, overnight tills operating from one business day to the next must be closed before midnight and re-opened after midnight. This process ensures daily cash sales are properly reported.

  • Closing Tills by Midnight: To maintain accurate cash sales reporting for each business day, all tills must be closed before midnight. Tills left open beyond this time will affect the next day’s reporting and may lead to discrepancies in cash tracking.

  • Opening Tills After Midnight: Tills opened for shifts beginning after midnight should be treated as part of the morning procedures. This keeps new day transactions separate from the previous day’s data.

  • Continuous Operation: For stores with continuous late-night operation, staggered till closings may be used for accuracy. However, all tills must still be closed and reopened within the proper business day timeframe to avoid reporting issues.

Scheduled Reboots for Payment Terminals and POS Systems

Routine reboots are essential for both PCI compliance and optimal system performance.

  • Nightly Payment Terminal Reboots: To meet PCI standards, payment terminals are scheduled for staggered nightly reboots beginning at 2:00 AM (every 15 minutes per register). This minimizes disruption during non-peak hours.

  • Nightly POS Reboots: Vori POS is configured to automatically reboot at 2:00 AM. The system will be offline for approximately 2 minutes. If the till is in use at this time, the reboot will be deferred until the next business day.

  • Register Rotation: For improved performance and uptime, it is recommended that different registers be used for late-night transactions. This allows each system to complete its nightly reboot without affecting checkout operations.
